May 1882 match vs Hotham

Saturday 27 May - MCG

Melbourne 3.7
Hotham 4.5 (half time 2.2-2.2)

Hotham win by 1 goal

Goalkickers: Power 1, Stiffe 1, Morris 1

Stiffe was one of the goalscorers for Melbourne. The match was played in front of a very small crowd after the sizeable attendance of the season opener against Essendon, mainly due to a more attractive South Melbourne vs Carlton match being played down the road at East Melbourne.

Rannard captained for Melbourne in Lamrock's absence and was forced to open the game by kicking into a slight breeze, conceding the first two behinds of the match. Despite the initial setback they soon made first goal through Power courtesy of a kick from a mark 40 yards out.

The lead didn't last long, as Hotham equalised soon after, but Stiffe recovered the lead for Melbourne almost immediately. The visitors equalised again just before half time, and after the break the reds did most of the attacking but couldn't break through for another goal and the Hothamites eventually overhauled them to win 4-3.

Best were McKenzie, Aitken and Sloman.
