First spotted in 1933 when Melbourne travelled to the Riverina to play exhibition matches, Thompson trained with the Demons in 1934, the 6ft 3in forward had impressed playing against Francis Vine and Ivor Warne-Smith the year before.

Trained with the side in 1935 but did not graduate past the Seconds, and returned to Whitton in June.
