Debuting in 1952, Carroll was considered one of the rising stars of the emerging Demon side. He only played one game that year, and six each in the next three seasons before finally becoming a regular in 1956. That year he played 20 matches from a half-back flank, culminating in the 1956 Grand Final triumph.

In 1957 he missed the first 11 games of the season, returning in Round 18 and holding his spot through the premiership triumph.

Hampered by a recurring thigh injury that caused him to miss 10 games in the first half of 1958, Carroll played in Round 1 but was not seen again until Round 12. He played in that year's losing Grand Final. At 27 years old Carroll succumbed to muscle injuries and retired.
