Debuting in 1952, Carroll was considered one of the rising stars of his side. He only played one game that year, and six each in the next three seasons before finally breaking through as a regular in 1956. That year he played 20 matches from a half-back flank, culminating in the 1956 Grand Final triumph.

In 1957 he added a second flag to his collection despite missing 11 weeks of the season before returning in round 18.

Hampered by a recurring thigh injury that caused him to miss 10 games in the first half of 1958, Carroll played in Round 1 but was not seen again until Round 12. He played in that year's Grand Final but was on the losing side. At 27 years old he succumbed to muscle injuries and retired.
