June 1885 match vs Geelong

Saturday June 20 - MCG
Crowd - 5000

Melbourne 1.4
Geelong 3.6 (half time 1.3 to 2.3)

Goalkicker: Collie 1

After two wins in a row the Reds welcomed their old foes from the pivot to town and put up a decent fight before eventually suffering defeat. On a wet and slippery ground Geelong started with the breeze and got the first goal after 15 minutes, but after a period of pressure on the visiting goal Melbourne equalised through Collie. For some time after the second goal the play was even, but Geelong eventually kicked their second goal and the last of the half.

Melbourne were still in touch at half time and had the use of the slight wind, but quickly conceded the first goal of the half and were on the back foot for the rest of the game. In a rare foray forward McCrindle botched a golden chance on goal and Melbourne failed to add another score. The game was called off as darkness fell.

Best were Johnson, Kelly and Carroll.

Notes
The Age claims a 4-1 win to Geelong.
