Port Melbourne win by 3 goals
Goalkicker: J. Elliott 1
After three wins in a row Melbourne might have been expected to keep the streak alive in their first ever match against one of the league's 1886 newcomers but Port Melbourne handled them comfortably.
With the wind blowing across the ground, there was no advantage and neither side scored for the majority of the first quarter. Both defences were forced to bail their team out at some point during the term. Port got the first goal of the game, and in the second quarter they added another.
Elliott dragged one back for Melbourne, and from there his side dominated the second quarter but failed to register another major. They were confined to scoring behinds only and went into the long break a goal down.
Port put Melbourne away with two goals at the start of the last term, and though Melbourne dominated for much of the fourth quarter they couldn't break through.
Best were Griffiths, Murphy and Kelly.
