July 1870 Match vs Police

Saturday 9 July - Melbourne Ground

Melbourne 4
Police 0

Melbourne win by 4 goals

Goalkickers: A. Loughnan 1, Barker 1, Carr 1, Duff 1

The police side was captained by Conway of Carlton, but to even the game up the rules were that marks, holding of the ball and running with the ball would not be permitted. Several times Melbourne players had to be reminded of the new rules and stopped from running with the ball.

Despite the changes it soon became clear that the police were overmatched. They played with heart and defended for the first 30 minutes before finally conceding a goal from a well directed Loughnan kick. From there their goal was always under siege, and Duff kicked another soon after. Baker and Carr also added goals before the match was called off.

There were a number of injuries to police players throughout the day - including a broken collarbone and nose. The players had to withdraw from the game but Melbourne captain Henry Harrison allowed substitutes to be used.

Notes
Loughnan is referred to as "Loughnan Jr." Possibly Andrew Loughnane or Austin Loughnan.

It is possible that the rule alterations may have given the match the appearance of a soccer game.
