The club's Business Manager was promoted to the CEO role when Cameron Schwab resigned in August 1999. He had previously worked as general manager for the Essendon social club, and had played four Sheffield Shield games for Victoria during the 1976/77 season.
It was under his leadership that the plan was hatched to sell a home game to Brisbane every year for five years beginning in 2001. The deal would see Melbourne receive the same financial benefit for that match that they would for a 70,000 crowd at the MCG.
Having fallen out with President Gabriel Szondy, Anderson left the club on 23 October 2002, just six weeks after signing a new contract. He was succeeded by Ray Ellis in 2003.
