Recruited from the north of Victoria, the Melbourne recruiters got both Giles and Harold Ball at the same time. They had travelled to sign half-forward flanker and league leading goalkicker Giles when they also decided to sign the ruckman Ball as well.

Described as "a finely built, powerful fellow whose play radiated football sense and dash of a very high order". He battled a foot injured to make his debut in Round 1, but by midway through the year his VFL career was over. In 1940 he played for Ouyen, where he had moved as part of his teaching job. He also served in the Air Force during World War II.
