After missing the 1899 to 1902 seasons, Rippon was cleared to South Melbourne] in April 1903 at 29-years-old and played five games for them that year.

His brothers Les and Norm also played for the Redlegs.

Played cricket for Caulfield in 1909 alongside Les.

In 1917 he was serving on the Western Front of World War I where he was shot and killed.
