Recruited late in 1959, Mooney was runner-up in the 1960 thirds best and fairest. Trialled with the seniors in 1961 and was named on the supplementary list but didn't play despite finishing second in the Reserves Best and Fairest.

Played for Port Melbourne in early 1964, before transferring to Prahran mid-season. He remained there through 1966.
