Follower signed in April 1935 after impressing in the practice games and was likely to play in the Round 1 but injured his thigh in the last quarter of a practice match. King had been pursued by four clubs that visited him in person and one that contacted him by letter but joined Melbourne on the recommendation of his father.
King returned to Warracknabeel, but returned to the Seconds late in the year and kicked a goal in the winning 1935 Seconds Grand Final. He went back to Warracknabeel again in 1936.
