Footscray win by 42 points

Goalkickers: Darren Bennett 2, Stephen Tingay 2, Luke Beveridge 1, Andrew Obst 1, Grant Williams 1

Melbourne went in without Allen Jakovich, originally named in the squad, but relegated to a reserves match between the sides earlier in the day due to a combination of indifferent form and missing a training session. He kicked six in the reserves game. Steven Clark was a late withdrawal, replaced by Grant Williams.

Without their spearhead, the Demons were toothless in the first quarter. With Garry Lyon and David Schwarz both out with ankle injuries by quarter time, Darren Bennett was left to play a lone hand forward, with only Darren Cuthbertson for support, and was held to two goals for the game. Melbourne went goalless in the opening term. They were better in the second, but wastefully kicked 2.9. Footscray wasn't threatened again, moving into the next round of the pre-season tournament.

Best were Stynes, Viney and Obst.
