Described by Melbourne officials as "the star recruit of the year", Cameron was signed after the club had pursued him for two or three years but played just two matches. The follower/forward was initially signed on a one game permit, which was extended after his debut but after his second game Cameron decided that it was too hard to travel from Bairnsdale every week, and as he wouldn't play league football without training he declined to apply for a full clearance.
