Born in England, Royle debuted as a defender aged 19-year-old in 1898 and played three matches. He played in three consecutive wins at the start of the season before dropping out of the side. Royle applied for a clearance to Collingwood in June.
In 1915 he enlisted in the 7th Battalion of the AIF. After serving at Gallipoli, Egypt and in France he was killed by an enemy shell.
