22-year-old rover and wingman who was signed by Melbourne in 1954 after transferring from Tasmania to Puckapunyal on army duties but didn't play a game. The VFL initially cleared him by accident to Mildura Imperials, despite him not applying to join them. The issue was sorted out and McMahon returned to play in Melbourne's Seconds. In June that year he captained an Army services team against an Air Force side led by Geoff Collins.

McMahon played in the losing Seconds Grand Final, before leaving the club at the end of the year. Sandringham beat Box Hill for McMahon's signature in 1955, and got 27 games over two years out of him before he was transferred back to Hobart on army duties.
