Initially rookie listed by the Brisbane Lions at the end of 1999, Doherty left the Lions after one season. The 20-year-old tall defender was picked up by Melbourne at the end of that year. He played in a 2001 practice match, but no further senior games and left at the end of 2001.
Doherty played for Essendon and Bendigo in the VFL, then for, Golden Square in 2003, and ACT side Ainslie during 2004 and 2005. He later played for Old Scotch and represented Victoria. He later captained Oxford University in a game against Cambridge University, and Great Britain Universities in a match against Ireland.
Later worked as a journalist for The Age and Guardian Australia.
