Melbourne's first official practice match of the season, after an unofficial game against Richmond, pitted them against the side that had ended their 2023 campaign. At the 6.30pm first bounce the temperature was still nearly 38 degrees, and the visitors had the advantage of kicking to the shaded end of Princes Park. After several inside 50s for no reward, Max Gawn kicked a 60 metre goal to get the Demons started. They registered five goals in the first term and were rarely challenged again, opening a nearly six goal lead at the break as the heat dropped off.

By the final quarter, Simon Goodwin was in experimentation mode and introduced Kynan Brown and Koltyn Tholstrup from the bench.

Best were Gawn, Sparrow and Salem.
