Melbourne win by 59 points
Only game as coach
In their first AFLW game against the 2022 expansion side, Melbourne found the going almost as easy as a 58 point pre-season win. The inexperienced Hawks were outmatched, allowing two goals into the breeze in the first term and only kicking one for the evening from a free kick. Regular Melbourne coach Mick Stinear stepped aside to allow Shae Sloane to take charge, and she began her coaching career with an easy victory.
With the setting sun causing difficulties for a game that started at 5.05pm, Hawthorn had chances but were wasteful and allowed Melbourne easy transition. The margin blew out with a four goal to one third term, before the Hawks were kept scoreless in the last quarter, making it the 13th consecutive match where the Demons hadn't allowed a fourth quarter goal.
Best were Hanks, Heath and Gillard.
