In a battle between two finals contenders with serious implications at the top of the ladder, the Demons got the jump on the visitors with the first two goals of the game. The sole major in the third quarter set up a 17 point lead at the last change, and though Melbourne didn't score again they defended strongly enough to restrict North and hold on to win.
