The unfancied Tigers jumped to an early lead, kicking the first two goals of the game. They failed to take advantage of several minutes of domination early in the quarter, and a Tayla Harris goal at the other end kept Melbourne in the game. The Demons then kicked away in the second quarter, building a match-winning lead with five goals nil. Richmond chipped away during the second half but never got close enough to challenge, leaving Melbourne 2-0 to start the season.
Best were Hanks, West and Paxman
