With the prize of a guaranteed finals spot on offer, Melbourne had a hot start against the high-flying Dockers, opening up a four goal lead in the first half. Freo launched a comeback that saw him hit the front in the final term, only for Maddie Gay to convert a set-shot that put her side ahead again. The visitors held out in a frantic last few minutes and won, qualifying for their second consecutive finals series.
Jane Lange coached the side as Mick Stinear was unable to travel as his wife was soon to give birth.
Best were L. Pearce, Paxman and Scott. Sinead Goldrick injured her hamstring.
