On a hot Sydney day, the visitors were the better side in the first quarter but failed to capitalise on their opportunities and allowed GWS to level. The decisive break came in the second, with 2.5 to 0.1. GWS only kicked one more goal for the day, as the sides split two goals in the third quarter before Melbourne put on four to nil to register a vital percentage boost.
Best were Cunningham, Gay and Paxman.
