Melbourne's first ever game at Highgate Recreation Reserve was played in swirling winds, and with the advantage of the breeze in the first quarter the Bulldogs got away to an early lead. Their downfall came kicking into the wind in the second and fourth quarter when they were unable to kick a goal.
A 4.7 to 0.1 last quarter delivered victory to a near full strength team against a Bulldogs side missing many of their best players.
Best were Viney, N. Jones and Gawn.
Team
N. Jones, Salem, Watts, Viney, Gawn, Tyson, Oliver, Dunn, Stretch, Kent, Frost, Garland, Pedersen, Michie, Vince, McDonald, Hunt, Grimes, Bugg, Kennedy, Garlett, vandenBerg, Jetta, Wagner, Harmes, M. Jones
Notes
Billy Stretch was named in the final team but did not play.
