Melbourne's hopes of winning collapsed when they failed to score in the third quarter, a repeat of the attacking woes that ailed them in their 1997 wooden spoon season. They had some excuses, missing Garry Lyon, Stephen Tingay, David Neitz, Matthew Febey and Damien Gaspar. Additionally, Jim Stynes only played the second half and David Schwarz sat out the final term.
Neale Daniher was unconcerned, saying: "I was happy we had a really good hit-out".
