The Eagles were missing eight of their premiership side, but the Demons were without the injured Steven Febey, Garry Lyon and David Schwarz, as well as the dewlisted Allen Jakovich. Then in the days before the game they lost Stephen Tingay (back), Glenn Lovett (hamstring) and Kevin Dyson (quad). It left with them with a much weakened squad, and needing to ask the AFL permission to use Michael Prentice as a fill-in. Football Manager Richard Griffiths said the side was not fully-focused on the warm-up competition, saying "We have centred our pre-season programme to be prepared for the first round match against Geelong".
Best were Viney, B. Lovett and Lovell. Sean Charles suffered a broken wrist and Brett Lovett a broken hand. Andy Lovell became the first player to be reported on video evidence, and was suspended two matches for striking.
