After a strong first three quarters, Melbourne suffered their fourth pre-season loss for the year. Their cause wasn't helped by losing players to injury. Simon Eishold badly injured his knee during the second quarter, Greg Healy hurt his shoulder in the third quarter and both, Allen Jakovich (back) and Rod Grinter (shin) were removed from the game in the last quarter.
With the Demons badly weakened, Richmond pounced and ran over the top to win.
The game was played under an experimental three umpire system.
Best were G. Lovett, B. Lovett and Stynes.
