In what was ironically the last game Ron Barassi would coach at the club he left the Demons for, Ray Biffin returned from suspension and Tony Sullivan recovered from a knee injury suffered in the last home and away match.
A deserved lead at three-quarter time was extended into a comfortable win thanks to best on ground Greg Wells who kicked two goals and had a hand in another two. Graham Molloy was also prominent at centre half-forward.
Davis, Keenan and Townsend were also amongst the best. Sinclair replaced Alves in the selected side.
