Two time defending night series champions Hawthorn were denied the chance at a hat-trick in a thrilling finish at Lake Oval. The Hawks were 15 points down at the 18 minute mark of the last quarter but staged a grand comeback to level the scores three minutes into time-on when Peter Hudson kicked his 7th goal. A minute later John Townsend got the point that won the game and put the Demons into the final.
