A big crowd turned out despite intermittent bad weather throughout the day, and early in the game Melbourne played more cohesive football while the southern Tasmanian team were all at sea. They began to improve as the day went on, and eventually took over as the better side but they had left themselves too much work to do.
The first Melbourne goal came shortly after the start of play, and they kept the Tasmanians scoreless until the last few minutes of the quarter when they kicked their first behind.
Melbourne kicked three more goals in the first few minutes of the second quarter to take a commanding lead, but the locals finally sparked at this point and kicked the last two goals of the half to keep themselves in the match.
After the interval the two sides were more evenly matched, but Melbourne still extended their lead to 42 points. The Tasmanian League players stormed home in the last quarter to cut the margin to 17 but never really challenged for victory.
