Hawthorn's captain before joining Melbourne, the rover/forward never played again after seriously injuring his knee in the second quarter of the Round 13, 1915 loss to Collingwood.

He enlisted in the Australian Army in January 1916 was transferred to France in November of that year. In October he played in an exhibition game in front of 3000 people in London. Collins served throughout the conflict before returning to Australia in 1919.
