September 1884 match vs South Melbourne

Saturday 13 September - Fitzroy Cricket Ground
Crowd: 1500

Melbourne 0.10
South Melbourne 0.8 (half time 0.6-0.4)

Match drawn

Playing against a side they had already beaten twice in 1884, and who had lost five games in a row against Victorian sides, South Melbourne went into the game as clear favourites but were tripped up by a tricky breeze across the ground which contributed to a lack of goals. Melbourne won the toss, but the positioning of the goals meant it was more of a hindrance to the sides than an advantage.

The two sides traded behinds early, but as well as the wind both sides' defences were doing well at keeping goals at bay and they went into half time goalless.

It was much of the same in the second half, as the wind was still causing havoc. South indulged in rough play to try and tip the balance in their favour but it didn't work. It was the first match of the year where no goals were kicked.

Best were Moss, Propsting and Ross.
