Collingwood went in as strong favourites, having finished two wins above Melbourne on top of the ladder, holding a record of only having lost to the Redlegs three times in 14 years and only having lost 10 matches to them in total in 64 previous meetings.

They had also thrashed the Reds in the 1925 Preliminary Final, and at half time it looked as if there was going to be another dose with a five goal second quarter opening up a 22 point lead at the long break.

Collingwood kicked the first goal of the third term to extend the margin to nearly five goals, then Col Deane moved into the ruck, and his lethal partnership with rover Herbert White helped engineer a grand comeback. Eight goals ended the quarter and the Reds turned for home two goals to the good.

Two posters opened the last term, but Collingwood struck back and looked set to run over the top of their opponent but Melbourne steadied to win - a goal from Robert C Johnson proving vital.

Despite the win the finals system meant that Melbourne still had to play off against Essendon for the right to meet Collingwood again in the Grand Final.

Best for Melbourne were Deane, Wittman and Corbett.
