The Demons failed to use the wind effectively when they had it, and when it died down in the last quarter they handicapped themselves by missing simple shots on goal. The whole day had been a battle to crack the tough Hawk half-back line and when they finally found their way through in the last term they missed as many chances as they kicked and it cost victory.
Best were Flower, Elshaug and Fowler. Flower had 33 touches and 11 marks but it was his opponent, Geoff Ablett, who put on a match winning performance for the Hawks.
Jim Durnan suffered a sprained ankle and Tony Martyn a bruised hip.
