Bouncing back from their first loss of the season a week earlier the Demons held on to third place on the ladder with a big win in Geelong. The Cats stuck with their more fancied opponents for the first half, and took a lead in the second quarter, but the visitors took over in the third term as their greater strength and experience took over. They were helped by a star turn from Brian Dixon on the wing, who had been held well early before taking over and beating two opponents.
Against the side who had finished last the previous season, Melbourne took time to get going but in the end they played with better system and teamwork. Their attack, especially the half-forward line, dominated and Geelong were eclipsed in the roving battle. Two goals from Hassa Mann in the third quarter, took his total to five by the last change.
Four goals in the first few minutes of the last quarter - including two from free kicks - put the result beyond doubt and earned Melbourne their fifth win of the new season. It was their highest score in Geelong since 1946.
Best were Tunbridge, Mann and Mithen. Tunbridge (thigh) and Bob Johnson were both replaced in the last quarter, by Brenchley and Fenton-Smith respectively. Mithen suffered split webbing of his hand.
