After a rocky start to the season where the defending premiers found themselves 3-2 after five rounds, a match against the bottom of the table Swans was the tonic Melbourne needed and South were no match for them.
The Demons were better in all aspects of the game, with Athol Webb on target up front for the first time all season, and despite their dodgy first few weeks the evenness of the competition allowed them to go back into first place on the ladder.
South stayed within striking range for the first half but gradually slipped away through the third quarter before being blown out of the water by a six goal to one final term.
Adams, Beckwith and Case were the Demons best. Ridley (bruised arm) was replaced by Dunford and Beckwith (bruised thigh) by Carroll. Both changes took place in the last quarter.
