Biggest loss and lowest score against University
A week after kicking two goals against St Kilda, Melbourne were at it again with another pitifully low score and inaccurate shooting. In slippery conditions, even their single goal for the day was a hurried snap from a seemingly hopeless position.
University's fine performance in winning their first game against the oldest club, came despite the heavy ground slowing their ruckman. Neither side kicked a goal on the greasy ground in the first quarter. When University got their first early in the second quarter it sparked a brief Melbourne revival, but they were unable to break through for more than two points for the term and were clearly the inferior team.
The Students took over in the third quarter, turning back a Melbourne rally that opened the quarter and booting six goals to nil to leave the Reds on just four behinds at the last change. The visitors got a belated goal through Onyons in the last quarter but were thrashed.
Best were Mills, Coutie and Conquest. Nolan played despite injuring his foot in a railway carriage door prior to the game.
