The Demons struggled to shake off the 17th placed Hawthorn, conceding a half-time lead and only narrowly edging ahead at three quarter time. A goal to the Hawks in the opening seconds of the final quarter cut the margin to less than a goal, and they missed a gilt edged chance to take the lead by dropping a mark in the square. This prompted a deluge of goals by Melbourne, kicking eight for the rest of the quarter to register a comfortable victory and remain unbeaten.
Best were Gawn, McDonald and Lever. Tom Sparrow was unused medical substitute.
