Melbourne were known as one of the slowest teams in the competition, and after three even quarters they were eventually run over by the speedier Dockers. Their best chance to strike a blow came in the first quarter when they might have led at the break but converted poorly in front of goal, going in behind.
The Demon cause was not helped in the third quarter when they lost Todd Viney to a hamstring injury, but Fremantle's inaccurate kicking for goal kept them in the game and they were just three points behind at the final change.
In a scrappy match Craig Turley played his best game for the Demons, kicking three goals including a standing start goal from the boundary line in the last quarter for what would be Melbourne's only major of the term as Fremantle ran over the top of them.
Best were Turley, B. Lovett and Stynes.
