On a wet day sun didn't shine through until the second half, but the South Melbourne ground held up better than most others across the league given the conditions.

Melbourne goalled first through Langley, and could have had more if McGinis hadn't two missed one shot and had another marked on the line. The visitors then took over - aided by a poor umpiring decision which gave them their first goal - and kept Melbourne to four behinds for the rest of the first half while scoring three goals of their own.

South started the third quarter with one player limping around the field and one forced to leave the game due to injury but managed to score the first goal of the quarter before Melbourne challenged them and cut the margin to under one straight kick at the last change. They extended their lead to 10 points, but Melbourne cut the gap to less than a goal thanks to Wardill. South held on to win narrowly when Purse missed a late chance on goal.

Best were Moodie, Moriarty and Cumberland.

Notes
Record spells Langley as "Laughley"
