Melbourne's second win of the year levelled them at 2-2 and kept their early hopes of qualifying for the finals alive. Against a dispirited opposition, the game was won in a first half where they opened up a 31 point lead at the long break. They were up to 40 points in front during the third quarter before the Roys reduced the margin to just over five goals, but it was still too much. The Demon defence was too strong, and Fitzroy were unable to make any further inroads.
The result was confirmed in the fourth term with three goals to one. Fitzroy's Bill Stephen limped off the ground and his side missed him in defence as the Demons kicked away. Two early goals confirmed victory and took the sting went out of the game. Fitzroy had tried to crowd the play so their vigorous bumping tactics would be influential, but couldn't hold the Demons out.
McMahon, McKenzie and Cordner were best. Laidlaw (leg injury) was replaced by Bull at half time and Melville (corked leg) was replaced by Carroll in the last quarter. Peter Marquis injured his knee.
