Melbourne started slowly with the wind, but strong defence by Tomkins and Odgers kept Geelong to a single goal at quarter time. One prominent supporter blamed their listlessness on the train journey to Geelong. Melbourne had the chance to kick a goal late but missed, leaving them with a single behind for the quarter. The home side woke up early in the second term, kicking four goals to one. Even when Melbourne finally got one they conceded almost immediately, leaving them 29 points behind at the long break.

It didn't get much better for Melbourne in the second half, with Hendrie not starting the third quarter due to an earlier leg injury. More rain began to fall and Geelong handled it better, leading by 31 points at the last change. A slight breeze helped them add two more goals to their lead.

Odgers was Melbourne's best in his first game of the year, followed by Kennedy and McKenzie.
