Fred Sleeman (2nd game)

Melbourne sprung an upset in defeating South and they had the better of the play even if they trailed on the scoreboard for much of the day. South's accurate goalkicking kept them in front from the second quarter to the last.

During the game there were two notable incidents, one where Melbourne conceded the first goal of the day because an unnamed player was too busy adjusting his hat "on the right artistic angle" and failed to stop his opponent scoring.

The other involved a small terrier invading the field of play and running into a ruck duel where a South player tripped over the canine. Melbourne's Purse made the mistake of patting the dog and it started following him, eventually ending up in the middle of the play where it clung to the pants of players before eventually wandering back to the pavilion.

Best were Strong, Nolan and Purse. Conquest injured his shoulder.
