A week after getting their season back on track with a win, the defenders found their forwards badly out of touch and had their score doubled by the Magpies. They were forced to field a weakened side through injury, missing Cumberland, Ryan, Shaw and Sholl from their best side, as well as captain Dick Wardill who had retired. Before the game Bill McClelland was unanimously elected as the new captain after Fred McGinis declined the position.
After an even first quarter, Collingwood kicked the only goal of the second term and kept Melbourne scoreless. They held a 17 point lead at three quarter time, and though Melbourne had the first attack of the last quarter they were unable to capitalise, and the ball went down the other end for the sealing goal. The Redlegs kept up the fight, but were only able to kick behinds early in the term and their two goals came too late to make the match a contest.
Best were Bowe, Moriarty and Parkin.
