Bob Skilton and his side crashed to their third straight loss of the new campaign, and their second by under three goals.

The Cats set up their victory with a seven goal first quarter and they held their lead for the rest of the game despite nearly giving it away in the last quarter. The Demons played twelve brilliant minutes in the final term on route to 7.3 for the quarter.

Geelong kicked a goal at the start of time-on to give themselves breathing space but Melbourne banged on two in two minutes to make it interesting. Peter Keenan booted three goals during the last quarter, but he'd given away three goals from frees earlier in the day.

Best were Alves, Clark and Wells. Chamberlain (bruised shin) was replaced by Murray in the third quarter. Peter Williamson was an unused reserve.
