In what would be Melbourne's last ever game at Brunswick Street, they were staring down the barrel early as Fitzroy gave their fans a promising start with an accurate start.

Four straight goals to quarter time saw then go in narrowly behind, and they extended that to six at half time, but the ruthless Melbourne who had all but dominated the previous decade kicked seven goals in the second term to take the lead and were never headed again.

When Brian Roet, Peter McLean and Don Williams got on top of the brittle Roys forward line there was no way back. Until the five minute mark of the second term Fitzroy were on top, but after that it was all Melbourne. 7.5 for the quarter gave them a half-time lead and all the momentum to go on and win.

Townsend and Lord both kicked five, but were both inaccurate with 5.6 and 5.7 respectively.

Williams, McLean and Lord were the Demons best. Groom was replaced by Leitch in the last quarter. Davis injured his knee.
