Entering the match with one win and one loss, Melbourne desperately needed a victory over Fitzroy to spark their season but after half time they put in a terrible performance and were beaten comfortably.
The Maroons had won both their games already that year, so it wasn't a big surprise that they were a match for the home team but the nature of their victory was most impressive.
Fitzroy won with a superior performance by their tall players, with Bert Clay unbeatable in the ruck which provided a handy platform for his teammates to drive the Roys forward into attack time after time.
Lock, McGrath and McLean were best.
The former President of Eire Eammon De Valera was in attendance for the first half of the match with his host Arthur Calwell - Federal Minister for Information.
