Melbourne travelled to Geelong for the Queen's Birthday clash and their 100th league game but were thrashed. They had bad luck from the start, with captain Wardill absent as he had missed his train.
In a fast, open game the locals jumped to a comfortable early lead by kicking 3.2 to a point in the first quarter. On the change of ends Geelong attack again, but Melbourne came back to give some hope of a close finish by winning the second quarter 14 points to four. They then failed to score again for the remainder of the match.
Best were Langley, McClelland and Geddes.
At the conclusion of the game Geelong's president invited the visiting Melburnians to join his side in the pavilion for refreshments. There a toast was drank to the Queen and to the health of the Melbourne team. Mr MacMullen complimented them on the way they had accepted defeat. Melbourne's acting captain Eddie Sholl accepted the thanks.
