The newly crowned wooden spooners travelled to the Lake Oval to end a season which saw them claim their first spoon since 1951. If they had beaten the second last Lions a week earlier the match would have been a chance to avoid the spoon, but the loss to the Roys made it a dead rubber.
The Swans bumbled their way through the first half, going in for the long break a point behind, but blew the Demons away in the second to run out as comfortable winners.
As usual Melbourne looked to Greg Parke and Ross Dillon to save them, but with both their big forwards being well held by South defenders there was nobody else up front who could kick a winning score. It was left to rookie rover Greg Wells to boot five.
Best were Townsend, Sullivan and Davis. Frank Davis had the end of his season ruined when he was knocked out during the last quarter and suffered from a concussion and broken nose. John Sudholz was reported for striking him. Davis was replaced by Feldmann. Daryl Powell was an unused reserve.
