The reigning wooden spooners had beaten a disappointing Footscray in the first round, but it seemed like a step too far for them to go to Arden Street and beat the league's new glamour side North.

Five goals down at one stage in the second quarter the Demons struck back to be just two points behind at half time, and at one point opened up a 21 point lead before North charged home in the final minutes. When Stan Alves, beaten comfortably all day by Keith Grieg, broke free to kick the winning goal at the 28 minute mark of the last quarter it capped a huge early season upset.

Best were Flower, Ditterich and Hardeman. Des Campbell and Ted Carroll were unused reserves.
