Melbourne returned to the MCG to unveil their premiership pennant after a disappointing 10 goal loss to Geelong in Round 1. The flag was unveiled by Mrs. Flintoft, wife of Chairman Bill Flintoft, but the day was an unhappy one as the Demons were beaten again.

On an afternoon featuring cold wind and showers, the a rusty Melbourne trailed at every break in a close match. They ended up with more goals on the board than the Pies, but seven more scoring shots made the difference for the visitors. At quarter time they were two goals to three behind, but behind the Cordners dominating they ruck they turned to long kicking tactics which took the lead. The Pies only grabbed the half time lead back courtesy of a goal on the bell.

The Demons had put in a far better performance than they had in Geelong, but even with a side battling injuries, Collingwood's smalls were the difference. Even though they were weakened by injuries the Magpies' adapted to the slippery conditions better - and while Melbourne had chances to win they would have stolen the game. The lead was out to 18 points at the last change before the Demons launched a final desperate attack. Two long goals from Arnold, and one from closer in to Denis Cordner cut the gap to eight points, before Alby Rodda made it less than a kick but Collingwood held on to win.

Best were Denis Cordner, Collins and Dockett. 19th and 20th men were Roscoe and Stone.
